UV printing that catches the light.

UV Printing

Spot UV and blind UV: glossy, raised coatings that make parts of your box catch the light.

Spot UV

Gloss printed exactly over parts of your artwork - a logo, a pattern or a line of text - so they shine against a matte box.

Spot UV is lined up with your printed design, so only the areas you choose turn glossy. On a matte or soft-touch box the contrast is striking: the logo shines while the rest stays calm.

It is the classic way to make one detail stand out without adding another colour.

Blind UV

Clear gloss printed on its own, with no artwork beneath - a hidden pattern that appears as the box turns in the light.

Blind UV is printed straight onto a plain or solid-colour area, without any printed design underneath to line up with. Head-on it is almost invisible; tilt the box and a pattern, logo or texture appears in the shine.

It suits minimal packaging - all-black, kraft or a single brand colour - where you want a quiet detail that rewards a closer look. Printed thicker, it can also be felt as a subtle raised texture.

UV printing, in detail

What is UV printing on packaging?

A clear coating printed onto chosen areas and cured instantly with ultraviolet light, leaving a hard, glossy finish.

Because it is printed only where you choose, it creates contrast: glossy areas against a matte box. Curing with UV light makes it set straight away, so it stays crisp and resists scuffs.

Spot UV or blind UV?

Spot UV highlights your printed artwork; blind UV creates its own pattern on a plain area.

Choose spot UV when a logo or image in your design should shine. Choose blind UV when you want a hidden, tone-on-tone detail - a repeating pattern across a black lid, for example - that only shows when the light catches it.

  • Spot UV: makes your print shine
  • Blind UV: a pattern of its own
  • Both stand out most on matte

Which boxes suit UV printing?

Smooth, coated boards - folding cartons, cosmetic boxes and the wrap on rigid boxes - show UV at its best.

A matte or soft-touch coating underneath gives the strongest contrast. On uncoated kraft the gloss soaks in and looks flatter, so we will advise on your board before you approve the proof.
