Choosing pet products packaging

Which box suits pet treats, chews and food?

For most treats we recommend Custom Folding Cartons, with the treats sealed in their own pouch or bag inside, and a Custom Window Boxes build when you want shoppers to see the shape and colour of the chews.

Most pet treat brands already pack their treats in a sealed pouch, so the carton's job is to carry the brand, the feeding information and the barcode, and to sit square on the shelf. A tuck end carton suits light bags of biscuits and training treats, and a crash-lock bottom suits heavier packs that are filled from the top. For larger bags of food, a printed carton or a corrugated outer keeps the pack upright and stops it slumping on a shelf.

If a treat goes into the box with no inner wrap, tell us at the quote stage. We confirm the board is suitable for direct food contact before production, or we recommend a simple paper or glassine bag inside so the carton stays a carton.

  • Tuck end cartons for light bags of biscuits and training treats
  • Crash-lock bottoms for heavier packs filled from the top
  • A window when the chew itself is the selling point

What packaging works for dog and cat toys?

Toys suit open-fronted and windowed boxes, so a shopper can see and often squeeze the toy, and Custom Hang Tab Boxes when the toy sells from a peg hook.

Plush toys, rope toys and balls come in shapes that do not sit neatly in a closed carton, and buyers like to see them. We make windowed cartons with a clear panel cut to show the toy's face or texture, and we can leave the window as an open cut-out where a shopper should be able to touch the toy.

For a toy bundle or a new range launch, Custom Pillow Boxes make a neat, light pack for small toys and accessories, and Custom Kraft Packaging gives a natural look that sits well with rope and cotton toys. Send us the toy itself measured at its widest and deepest points, and we size the box around it so it stays in view without rattling about.

Can a pet box hang on a peg hook in a pet shop?

Yes. Our Custom Hang Tab Boxes have the hang tab folded from the carton itself, so collars, leads, toys and grooming tools hang straight on a retail peg with no extra header card.

The tab is a double layer of board folded into the top of the carton, so it holds the weight of a lead or a brush firmly at the hole. We set the box depth to suit the peg, leave a clear space above the hole for a shop label, and can add a window so the colour of a collar shows through. If a stockist also wants the product on a shelf, we can add a tear-off tab so the same carton stands upright once the tab is removed.

For counter sales, our Custom Display Boxes hold treats, chews and small toys in an angled tray with a front lip, ready to put by the till. They ship flat and fold up in the shop.

  • Folded hang tab, no separate header card
  • Window to show a collar, lead or toy
  • Display trays for counter-top treats and chews

How do you package collars, leads and harnesses?

We size the box around the item coiled or folded the way you want it displayed, then add a card insert or a hang tab so it stays in that shape until it is opened.

A lead is long and flexible, and a harness folds into an awkward bundle, so the first step is deciding how it will be presented. A coiled lead suits a square carton with a window or a card insert that holds the coil in place. A collar can sit flat in a slim box or curl around a card, so the buckle and any engraving face the front. For premium leather collars and matching sets, Rigid Gift Boxes with a fitted insert give the reveal of a gift.

Tell us the length of the lead, the width of the collar and how you want it to face the shopper, and we draw the insert on the dieline so you can see the layout before anything is printed. Our Packaging Inserts come in cardboard, corrugated, foam and rigid builds, and Die Cut Inserts can hold a collar, a lead and a tag together in one box.

What box do grooming products need?

Shampoos, sprays and balms usually go in folding cartons sized to the bottle or tub, and grooming kits of brushes, combs and clippers suit a mailer box or rigid box with a fitted insert.

For a single bottle or tub we make a carton sized to its outside dimensions, with the product name, directions and ingredients laid out on the panels before the branding goes around them. An insert that grips the neck holds a pump or spray head still.

A grooming kit sells as a set, so the presentation of the open box matters as much as the outside. We cut a space for each tool in a Die Cut Insert, so a brush, comb and nail clipper each have a place and the customer can put them back after use. Custom Mailer Boxes work well for kits sold online, and Rigid Gift Boxes suit gift sets sold in pet boutiques or at Christmas.

What box carries heavy pet products such as large food bags and beds?

For heavy and bulky orders we recommend Custom Shipping Boxes, with the board strength matched to the weight you tell us.

Large bags of dry food, cat litter, pet beds and scratching posts are heavy or bulky, and they often ship as part of a bigger order. Send us the weight and the packed size of the product, and we choose the corrugated board and the box style to carry it. A close fit stops a heavy bag shifting inside the box, which is what keeps the corners square on the doorstep.

For light but large beds we size the box closely, and we can print handling and contents markings on the outer, and leave a plain area for the shipping label, so your packing team and the courier both know what is inside.

How do you design a monthly pet subscription box?

We make Custom Subscription Boxes with one footprint for every month, so the outer box stays the same while a printed sleeve, band or theme card changes with each delivery.

A pet subscription usually mixes treats, a toy or two and sometimes a grooming item, and the mix changes every month. We size the box around the largest month you plan, then use a card insert to stop the smaller items sliding about. Many pet brands choose a plain or kraft outside with a bright printed inside, so the box looks simple at the door and the reveal happens when the lid comes up.

If you offer plans for dogs and cats, or for small, medium and large dogs, we keep the same box footprint across the tiers and change the print or the sleeve. A printed card naming the month's theme and listing the treats rounds off each delivery.

  • One footprint across every month and plan tier
  • Plain outside, printed inside, if you prefer
  • Swappable sleeves, bands and theme cards

What should I send you to quote my pet packaging?

Tell us the products, their measurements and weight as packed, whether treats are wrapped, and how each one is sold, and we recommend a box style for each.

Pet ranges often cover several kinds of product at once: treats, toys, accessories and heavier items. List each one with its size and weight, and say whether it sells on a shelf, on a peg hook, by the till, online or in a subscription. That tells us which items can share a box size and which need their own.

We then send a dieline for each box and a digital proof of your artwork on it, so you can check the fit and the look before anything is printed. On reorders we print from the same approved files, so a new batch of treat cartons matches the last one on the shelf. If you would like a finish, Embossing & Debossing, spot UV or Gold, Silver & Rose Gold Foiling can pick out a logo, and Lamination or Varnish protects a carton that is handled often.
