A light, clear finish

Varnish

A clear liquid coating - matte, gloss or semi-gloss - that finishes and protects the print at a lower cost than lamination.

Matte varnish

A flat, low-shine finish that softens the print and cuts glare.

Matte varnish takes the shine off the ink for a natural, understated look. It suits kraft-style and minimal designs, and keeps text easy to read under bright shop lights.

  • Low shine, natural look
  • Easy to read under lights
  • Suits minimal designs
02

Gloss varnish

A bright, shiny finish that lifts colours and adds a light sheen.

Gloss varnish brightens printed colours and gives the box a clean sheen. It is lighter than gloss lamination, so it suits everyday cartons and mailers where a little extra pop is wanted without the extra cost.

  • Brighter colours
  • A clean sheen
  • Lower cost than gloss lamination
03

Semi-gloss (satin) varnish

Halfway between matte and gloss - a soft sheen that flatters most designs.

Semi-gloss, also called satin, gives a gentle sheen without strong reflections. It is the safe middle choice when a design has both photos and text, or when you are not sure which way to go.

  • A soft, balanced sheen
  • Flatters photos and text
  • The safe middle choice

Varnish, in detail

What is varnish on packaging?

A clear liquid coating printed over the ink, like a final colour that has no colour.

Varnish seals the print so it rubs off less, and it sets the finish - matte, gloss or in between. Because it is printed rather than bonded as a film, it adds little thickness and keeps the board easy to recycle.

UV varnish or water-based varnish?

UV varnish cures hard and glossy under ultraviolet light; water-based (aqueous) varnish is softer and the more eco-friendly choice.

UV varnish gives a tougher, higher-shine coat and is also what spot UV is made with. Water-based varnish dries fast, is low in odour and suits food packaging and recycled boards. We advise on the right one for your box and board.

  • UV: tougher, glossier
  • Water-based: lighter, eco-friendly
  • Matched to your board

Is there a soft-touch varnish?

Yes - a soft-touch varnish gives a velvety feel at a lower cost than soft-touch lamination.

It is not quite as rich or as protective as the laminate, but it is a good way to add a premium feel to larger runs or tighter budgets. Ask for it in your quote.

Varnish or lamination?

Varnish is lighter, lower in cost and easier to recycle; lamination protects more and feels more premium.

Choose varnish for cartons and mailers, large runs and eco-minded packaging. Choose lamination for gift boxes and premium boxes that are handled often or kept.
