BoxifyMEYour brand, just way more boxified

Mascara boxes are long, narrow folding cartons built around a slim tube with a wand cap. They are among the narrowest boxes in cosmetics, which makes small differences in fit very noticeable: too loose and the tube rattles, too tight and it is hard to pull out. Many mascara cartons are designed to be seen standing in a row on a beauty counter, so the front face and the top panel carry most of the brand.

What changes the price.

Cost factors

Every project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.

Fit tolerance
Very narrow cartons need accurate cutting and folding to fit the tube well.
Range variants
Waterproof, volume and lengthening versions with different artwork add print versions.
Finishes
Metallic board, foil and spot gloss are common on mascara and each adds cost.
Quantity
Small cartons use little board each, so set-up is a larger share of the cost on short runs.

Choosing this format

Fitting a narrow tube

With a box only a little wider than a finger, a millimetre of clearance changes how the box feels.

Measure the tube diameter at the cap, the body and the base, as mascara caps are often wider than the barrel. A square carton around a round tube leaves gaps in the corners; this is normal, but the flats should touch the tube lightly.

Send us those measurements and we build the carton around them; the dieline shows the exact inside size, so you can check the fit before anything is cut. The aim is a tube that drops in without forcing and does not fall out when the box is tipped.

  • Measure cap and barrel
  • Light contact on the flats
  • Drops in, stays in when tipped

Keeping the wand sealed

The tube must stay closed in the box, or the formula dries and the wand can leak.

A carton that is too short presses on the cap and can work it loose on a bumpy journey. We allow a small gap at the top and bottom so the tube sits without end pressure.

Some brands add a shrink band or seal on the tube itself; check the carton height still clears it.

Designing for a counter row

Mascara is often seen as a row of narrow faces, so the front panel and the top must work at a glance.

On a narrow front panel, the product type and the brand name usually run vertically, with the claim or variant name in a contrasting colour. Many brands show the brush shape, since it is a buying point.

Ingredients and warnings go on the back and sides. Eye-area products often carry extra use and safety warnings, so give them enough of the back panel to stay readable.

Read all frequently asked questions
Can a mascara box also fit a liquid eyeliner?+

Often, yes, if the two tubes are close in length and width, which is common within one brand's range. Liquid liners are usually slimmer, so where the widths differ by more than a couple of millimetres we either make a separate size or add a small card insert at the base to hold the narrower tube steady. Send us both measurements with caps on and we recommend the better option.

How should waterproof and volume versions differ on the box?+

We usually recommend one carton design across the range, changing the colour band, the variant name and sometimes the brush picture, so the range reads as a family in a row. We make the variant word large on the front and top panels so shoppers pick the right one. A different foil colour per variant is very clear too, though each version is then printed as its own run.

Where does the barcode go on a mascara carton?+

We place it where it scans properly, usually running vertically on the back panel or on the base, because a slim side panel is often too narrow to fit a barcode across. A barcode can only be shrunk so far before scanners struggle, so we keep it at a readable size and show its position on the proof for you to approve.

How are mini and sample mascaras packaged?+

We make a short version of the same narrow carton, so minis match the full-size range, or fit several minis into one set box. A mini tube is short and light, so a simple tuck at each end holds it well. The panels are very small, so tell us what the text must include and we lay it out on the proof to make sure it all fits.
