Two-piece rigid boxes are the classic lid-and-base box: a rigid base and a separate lid that lifts straight off. The lid can cover the base completely (full telescope) or part way (partial telescope), which changes both the look and the cost. They are the most versatile rigid style, used for apparel, gifts, cosmetics, shoes and stationery.

Classic lid and base, your design.
Artwork and materialsArtwork wraps the lid and the base, and the lid depth decides how much of the base shows. The lid top carries your brand, and the inside can carry a message. Our packaging guides cover sizing, materials, print, and cost in more depth.
Lid wrap, base and inside
We set your artwork on the lid top and sides, and on any base area left showing below a partial lid. We place wrap seams on quiet edges, and the inside of the lid can carry a printed message.
Explore print and finishesPrinted, kraft or specialty wraps
Printed wraps give full-colour branding, kraft wraps give a natural, understated look, and specialty papers add texture for gifts and apparel. A belly band or ribbon adds a finishing touch.

Cost factorsEvery project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.
- Lid depth
- A full-depth lid uses more board and paper than a shallow one.
- Size
- Larger boxes use more board and wrap and take more space to ship.
- Wrap and print
- Printed or specialty papers and inside printing add to the cost.
- Extras
- Ribbons, inserts and finishes such as foil each add a part or a step.
Choosing this format
Full or partial telescope lid?
A full-depth lid covers the whole base for a clean block look; a shallow lid shows part of the base and uses less material.
A full telescope lid makes the box look like a solid block and protects every side. A partial telescope lid covers only the top part of the base, so a band of the base shows - it costs a little less and makes the lid easier to lift.
Some boxes use a thumb cut in the base sides so the lid can be lifted off easily. We show the lid depth on the digital proof, so you can see how much of the base shows before anything is made.
- Full depth: solid block look
- Partial depth: lower cost
- Thumb cuts help lifting
Why the two-piece box is so common
It is simple, sturdy and fits almost any product, and both parts can be printed and wrapped separately.
A lid and a base is the simplest rigid structure, which makes it the starting point for most rigid packaging. A contrasting lid and base, or a printed inside, gives a lot of variety from one simple shape.
Two-piece box or magnetic box?
A two-piece box suits a lid that can simply lift off; a magnetic box suits a product opened again and again, where the lid should stay attached.
A lift-off lid can be set down and lost, which matters for products opened again and again. A magnetic box keeps the lid hinged to the base, and a shoulder or drawer box makes the opening itself part of the experience.

Box style FAQsWe’ll confirm the exact details that apply to your structure and volume.
Read all frequently asked questionsHow tight is the lid of a two-piece rigid box?+
Snug enough to stay on when the box is carried or tipped, and loose enough to lift off without a struggle. We make the fit close enough to trap a little air, which gives the slow, soft lift many brands like. We allow for the thickness of the wrap paper on both parts, so the fit is right on the finished box.
Will the lid of a two-piece rigid box stay on when it is carried?+
Yes. The lid is made to a close fit, and a full-depth lid grips more of the base, so it stays on best of all. For posting or extra security, we can add a ribbon, a belly band or seal stickers on two sides, and we recommend sending the box inside a shipping box.
Do two-piece rigid boxes arrive ready to use?+
Yes. We make the lid and base as fixed, glued shapes, so they arrive ready to pack, with nothing to fold. That does mean a large order takes more room than flat cartons, so plan some storage space. If freight or space is the concern, a collapsible rigid box gives a similar look and arrives flat.
Is a two-piece rigid box good for shoes and apparel?+
Yes, it is one of the classic formats for both. For apparel, we make a shallow, wide box that holds a folded garment flat in tissue, and a partial lid makes it easy to open on a counter. For shoes, a deeper box with a full lid stacks well in a stock room. Send us the size of the folded garment or the pair of shoes and we size the box with room for tissue.
Can a ribbon be added to a two-piece rigid box?+
Yes, in two ways. We can glue a ribbon tab inside the base to help lift a snug product out, and a ribbon tied round the closed box adds a gift finish and keeps the lid on. Tied ribbons are usually added at packing, so we recommend a ribbon that ties neatly without crushing the lid edges.
