A mushroom grow kit is a block of growing medium already full of mushroom mycelium, sealed in a bag and packed in a printed box. The customer opens a window in the front, cuts the bag behind it and mists it with water, and within days the mushrooms push out through the window and grow on the kitchen counter. The box is the display stand, the instructions and the gift wrap at once, so it has to stand upright, cope with daily misting and look good enough to give. Oyster mushrooms are the classic kit, with lion's mane, shiitake and coloured oysters close behind.

A box the mushrooms grow out of.
Artwork and materialsThe front sells the kit and frames the window the mushrooms grow through; the sides carry your brand and the growing steps. Our packaging guides cover sizing, materials, print, and cost in more depth.
Front, window and steps
We set the variety name and a picture of the mushrooms around the window, keeping print clear of its edges. The growing steps go on a side or back panel, numbered and easy to follow.
Explore print and finishesCoated, kraft or corrugated
Coated paperboard gives the sharpest colour and resists misting, kraft gives a natural farm look, and corrugated suits larger or heavier blocks.

Cost factorsEvery project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.
- Quantity
- Set-up work is the same whether we make 100 boxes or 5,000, so the price per box falls as quantity rises.
- Window and handle
- The window and the carry handle are part of the cutting tool, so they add little once the tool is made; a film over the window adds a step.
- Moisture resistance
- A water-resistant coating keeps the box firm through weeks of misting, and coating both sides costs more than one.
- Print and finish
- Full-colour illustration on every panel costs more than a one or two colour design on kraft.
Choosing this format
How a grow-kit box works
The box holds a ready-to-grow block upright, and the mushrooms fruit straight out through a window in the front.
Inside is a block of growing medium, usually sawdust or straw, already colonised by mushroom mycelium and sealed in a bag. The box keeps it upright and in the dark until the customer is ready to start.
To begin, they open the window in the front panel, cut the bag behind it and mist the opening with water. The mushrooms grow out through the window, so the box stays on the counter as the stand for the whole crop.
- Block sealed in a bag inside
- Window opens to start growing
- The box is the growing stand
The window
The window is where the mushrooms come out, so its size and how it opens matter more than anything else on the box.
Most kits use a perforated panel that the customer pushes out, so the box stays closed and tidy on the shelf. Others have an open die-cut window covered by a film or an inner flap. Either way, the window has to sit over the face of the block that the mushrooms will fruit from.
A window that is too small crowds the cluster and bends the caps; one that is too large weakens the front of the box. Tell us the size of your block and the variety, and we size the window to the cluster it will grow.
- Push-out panel or open window
- Placed over the fruiting face
- Sized to the cluster
Moisture and misting
A grow kit is misted every day for weeks, so the board around the window has to stay firm when it gets damp.
Plain board softens with water, and a soft front panel sags around the window and lets the block lean. A water-resistant coating, at least on the inside, keeps the box upright through the whole growing cycle.
Keep the print clear of the window edges, where the board gets wettest, and print the growing steps where they stay readable once the window is open.
Carry handle, gifting and the shelf
Grow kits are often bought as gifts, so many boxes stand tall with a handle that is part of the same flat piece.
A carry handle that folds up from the top panels makes the kit easy to pick up in a shop and ready to give without a bag. It is part of the one cutting tool, so the box still ships flat and goes together by hand.
On the shelf, the front panel does the selling: the variety name, a picture of the mushrooms it will grow and how soon they appear. Each variety in a range can share one layout in its own colour, so the range reads as a family.
Instructions on the box
The customer grows the kit with the box in front of them, so the steps belong on the box itself.
Print the start-up steps, how often to mist, where to keep the kit and when to harvest on a side or back panel, numbered and short. A separate leaflet gets lost; a panel on the box stays with the kit until the last harvest.
Add a 'grow by' date area if your blocks need to be started within a set time, and keep it clear of the window so it is never cut away.

Read all frequently asked questionsHow big should the window in a mushroom grow kit box be?+
We size the window from your block and the variety it grows. Oyster clusters spread wide and need a generous opening, while lion's mane grows as a single rounded head and needs less. The window sits over the face the mushrooms fruit from. Send us the block size and the variety, and we place and size the window to fit.
Will the box hold up to daily misting?+
Yes. We make grow-kit boxes from board with a water-resistant coating, so the front stays firm around the window through weeks of misting. We keep your print clear of the window edges, where the board gets wettest, so the design stays clean until the last harvest.
Can the window stay closed until the customer starts growing?+
Yes. We cut the window as a perforated panel that the customer pushes out when they are ready to begin, so the box stays sealed and tidy on the shelf and in the post. Print the first step right on that panel, so opening it is the obvious way to start.
Can the growing instructions go on the box?+
Yes, and we recommend it. We print the start-up steps, misting and harvest notes on a side or back panel, numbered and short, so they stay with the kit for the whole crop. For more detail, we add a label or a QR code area that leads to your own guide.
Can one box design work for every variety we grow?+
Yes. We keep one layout for the range and change the colour, the variety name and the mushroom picture for each kit, so pearl, pink and golden oyster or lion's mane read as one family on the shelf. If your blocks differ in size, we make a box size for each and keep the design the same.
