What is the best packaging for retail coffee and tea?
For most brands it is two parts working together: a sealed bag, pouch or wrapped capsule that keeps the product fresh, and a printed box around it that protects it, stands up on the shelf and tells the story.
Coffee and tea go stale when air, light and moisture reach them, so the freshness job belongs to whatever is sealed around the beans or leaves. That frees the outer box to do everything else. We make the box around your filled pack, so it holds it upright, keeps light off it and gives you flat, printable panels that a soft bag never quite offers.
For everyday retail lines we usually recommend Custom Folding Cartons or Custom Coffee Boxes and Custom Tea Boxes built on the same carton structure. For a warmer, roastery look, Custom Kraft Packaging gives the same box an unbleached finish that suits coffee and tea especially well.
- The inner pack keeps it fresh
- The box protects it and does the selling
- We size the box to the filled pack, not an empty one
Which box suits loose leaf, tea bags, pods or ground coffee?
Each format packs differently, so we match the box to the product: tuck-end cartons for tea bags and capsules, caddies and tubes for loose leaf, and snug cartons for bags of beans or ground coffee.
Tea bags and capsules are counted items, so the box is built around a set number in neat rows, with a tear strip or tuck end that lets them come out one at a time without the rest falling over. Loose leaf is poured and scooped, so it suits a box the customer opens and closes again and again - a Custom Round Boxes tube or a Flip Top Boxes caddy keeps working on the kitchen shelf long after the first cup.
Whole beans and ground coffee in a bag sit best in a carton cut close to the bag's shape. Drip bags, the single-cup filters that hang over a mug, behave like tea bags and fit a slim carton in rows. Tell us which formats are in your range and we suggest one box family that covers them all.
Are tubes good packaging for tea and coffee?
Yes. A paper tube is one of the most giftable shapes for tea and coffee: it holds a sealed pouch neatly, the lid lifts off cleanly, and the round body gives your artwork a continuous wrap with no corners.
We make Custom Round Boxes as lift-off lid tubes, with the lid and base printed to line up so a pattern or label band carries all the way round. A tube suits loose-leaf tea, ground coffee, hot chocolate and drinking powders in an inner pouch, and many customers keep the empty tube to refill.
Tubes also work in sets. Two or three short tubes side by side in a gift box let a customer try several blends, and each tube can carry its own colour within one design. Send us the size of your filled pouch and we work out the tube's diameter and height around it on the dieline.
How do I make a tea or coffee range easy to tell apart?
We keep one shared layout for the whole range and change a single strong element per product - usually a colour, a band or a flavour panel - so customers find their blend in seconds and the shelf still reads as one brand.
If every box is designed from scratch the shelf turns into a patchwork. We build one master dieline and artwork layout, then give each product its own colour or band in the same position, with the name and the key detail - roast level, origin or decaf - in the same place every time.
The panels that carry this information work hardest. We place the flavour notes, brewing guide and weight where a shopper looks first, and leave a clear spot for a roast date or batch label that changes with every run. Custom Labels & Stickers let one printed box serve several blends when your range changes often.
- One layout, one colour or band per product
- Name and key detail in the same place on every box
- A fixed spot for a date or batch label
What should go in a coffee or tea gift set?
A good gift set pairs the drink with something to make it with - a mug, a scoop, an infuser, a filter or a small tin - and we give every item its own fitted space so the box opens to a finished arrangement.
Gift sets are where coffee and tea packaging moves from the shelf to the present. We make them in Rigid Gift Boxes, Magnetic Closure Boxes or Custom Drawer Boxes, with Packaging Inserts or Die Cut Inserts cut to the exact shape of each piece. A glass teapot or a ceramic mug gets the most support, and pouches or tubes sit in their own recesses beside it.
Finishes do much of the gifting work. Gold, Silver & Rose Gold Foiling on the logo, Embossing & Debossing on the lid, or a spot of UV Printing over a leaf or bean pattern make a set feel special without changing the structure. For seasonal sets, a printed sleeve over a plain rigid box lets you change the look for each season while the box underneath stays the same.
How do you package a coffee or tea subscription?
We make subscription boxes that fit your monthly contents snugly, travel through the post and open to a branded reveal, with the outer design fixed and the changing details carried on cards or stickers inside.
Coffee and tea are ideal subscription products: light, flat-packing and used up on a regular rhythm. We build Custom Subscription Boxes and Custom Mailer Boxes around the bags or pouches you send each month, sized so they do not slide about.
Print inside the lid is where a subscription earns its keep - a welcome line, a brewing tip or space to tell this month's origin story. Because the contents change but the box does not, we design the outside to last for many months, then you add a tasting card or a sticker for each release. A plain outside with a printed inside is another option when you want the reveal saved for opening.
Can a coffee or tea box be all paper on the outside?
Yes. We make the outer box entirely from paperboard or corrugated board, with a water-based coating instead of a plastic laminate, and no film window, so the box itself goes in with paper.
Kraft board, a matt or gloss Varnish instead of Lamination, and paper inserts instead of foam keep the box to one material throughout. Holographic or metallic effects still work through foiling, so an all-paper box can still look premium.
The inner bag is a separate choice, because freshness usually needs a barrier pouch or a sealed capsule. We can print a short disposal line on the box so customers know which part goes where, and we help you word it on the proof.
What do you need from me to quote coffee or tea packaging?
Send us each product as it will be packed - the filled bag, pouch, tube or capsule count - along with how it will be sold and anything that goes in alongside it, and we size the box around that.
Measure the pack when it is full and sealed, because a coffee bag with beans in it is a different shape from an empty one, and a pouch of fluffy herbal tea is bulkier than the same weight of rolled leaf. Tell us whether it will sit on a shop shelf, go out by post, be sold as a gift or ship in a monthly box, since that decides the style and the board. For café counters, we can also make Custom Drink Carriers to go with the rest of your range.
We then draw it up using our Dielines & Templates so you can see the size and every panel, and send a Digital Proofs file with your artwork in place. You approve the fit and look on the proof first.
- Measurements of each filled, sealed pack
- How it is sold: shelf, post, gift or subscription
- Any extras that go in the same box
