Hang tab boxes are folding cartons with an extra panel at the top, punched with a euro slot or a round hole so the box hangs on a peg hook. They let small products live on a retail wall instead of a shelf, at eye level and facing forward. They are common for phone accessories, cosmetics, hardware, toys, socks and small electronics.

What changes the price.

Cost factors

Every project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.

Tab construction
A single-layer tab costs least; a double-layer or glued-back tab uses more board and an extra fold.
Board thickness
Heavier products need thicker board so the tab does not tear or bend forward on the hook.
Window
A window cut and film let the product show, but add a cutting step and a part.
Print and finish
Full colour, foil or spot UV on the front panel add set-up and production steps.

Choosing this format

Euro slot or round hole?

A euro slot fits almost every retail peg and spreads the weight; a round hole is simpler and suits light products.

The euro slot, sometimes called a sombrero hole, is a wide slot with a raised centre. It sits over a peg hook or a scan-hook rail and stops the box from swinging. Most large retailers expect it, so check the planogram or the buyer's packaging spec before choosing.

A round hole is the oldest form and still works well for small, light items, but the box can spin on the hook so it does not always face forward. Tell us which hooks your stockists use and we cut the hole to match.

  • Euro slot: the retail standard
  • Round hole: light items
  • Check the retailer's spec

Will the tab hold the weight?

The tab carries the full weight of the box all day, so board thickness and tab design matter more than on a shelf carton.

A single-layer tab is fine for light goods. For heavier items the tab is often made double - folded back on itself or glued to the back panel - so the hole is punched through two layers and cannot tear out.

A tab that slowly bends forward makes the box tilt and hides the front panel. Tell us the filled weight of the box and we choose the board and tab build to carry it.

Designing for a peg wall

Shoppers see dozens of boxes at once, at arm's length, so the top third of the front panel does most of the selling.

On a peg wall, boxes overlap - the one in front hides the lower part of the one behind. Put the brand and product name high up, near the tab, where they stay visible on every hook.

Keep the barcode on the back or base so it can be scanned without unhooking the row, and leave the tab itself clear of key artwork, since the hole cuts through it.

Hang tab box or blister card?

A hang tab box hides and protects the product and gives more print space; a card with a plastic blister shows it but uses plastic.

Many brands move from blister cards to hang tab boxes to cut plastic. A window in the front panel keeps some of the see-it-before-you-buy appeal, while the rest of the box carries instructions, features and the brand.

Box style FAQs

We’ll confirm the exact details that apply to your structure and volume.

Read all frequently asked questions
Is the hang tab part of the carton or a separate piece?+

We make the tab part of the carton. It is an extension of the back panel, die cut from the same sheet, so there is no extra part to attach and the box packs quickly. On heavier boxes, we fold the tab over into a double layer so it carries the weight without tearing at the hole.

Can a hang tab box also stand on a shelf?+

Yes. We give the box a flat base and can make the tab fold flat or tear off along a perforation, so the same box works on a peg or a shelf. That means one design covers every way your retailers display it, and you only need to hold one box in stock.

How many hang tab boxes fit on one peg hook?+

It depends on the peg's length and the box's depth. Boxes hang one behind another, so a slimmer box fits more on each hook. Tell us your retailer's peg length and how many units you want on each peg, and we set the depth to suit, leaving room above the hole for a price or scan label.

Can a hang tab box have a window?+

Yes. We place the film window below a strip of solid board at the top, because the box hangs from its tab and that area carries the weight all day. That keeps the box straight on the peg while your product stays on show, and the film keeps dust off it.
