Essential oil boxes hold the small amber or cobalt bottles oils are sold in, from a single 10ml bottle in a slim carton to rows of bottles in a set box with a fitted insert. Because the bottles are small and similar, the box does most of the work of telling one oil from another. Set boxes rely on an insert with one hole per bottle so that glass does not touch glass.

Make each oil easy to find.
Artwork and materialsOil bottles look alike, so the box does the sorting: one design across the range with a colour band or panel that changes for each oil. Our packaging guides cover sizing, materials, print, and cost in more depth.
Colour bands and two faces
We build one range design with a colour band, icon or panel per oil, put the oil name on at least two faces, and can print names beside each hole in a set insert.
Explore print and finishesKraft, white and rigid
Kraft board gives a natural look, with white ink under colour bands so they stay bright, plain paperboard gives the crispest colours, and rigid board with card or foam inserts suits gift sets.

Cost factorsEvery project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.
- Bottles per box
- A set insert with many holes is a larger, more complex die-cut than a single carton.
- Carton or rigid
- Kraft or SBS cartons cost least; rigid set boxes with lids use more board and handwork.
- Versions
- Each oil printed as its own design adds plate or file changes, even when the box size is the same.
- Insert material
- Card inserts are cheapest; foam or wrapped inserts cost more and look more finished.
Choosing this format
One oil or a set?
Single oils usually go in a slim tuck carton, while sets need a box wide enough for a row or grid of bottles.
A single bottle carton is small and inexpensive and lets each oil stand on its own on a shelf. Sets of three, six or more are usually a lidded box or a tray with a sleeve, holding the bottles in a row or a grid so the caps can be read from above.
If a set includes a diffuser, roller or pipettes, send us their sizes too and we plan the insert around them, because odd shapes change the layout of the whole box.
- Single: slim tuck carton
- Set: tray or lidded box
- Plan room for accessories early
Inserts that keep glass apart
In a set box each bottle needs its own hole, so bottles cannot touch and crack in transit.
Small glass bottles knocking together is the main cause of breakage in oil sets. A die cut insert in card, or a foam block with cut-outs, holds each bottle separately. The holes should be sized to the bottle body, not the cap, so the bottle sits down into it rather than balancing on top.
Card inserts can be printed with each oil's name next to its hole, which helps customers put bottles back in the right place.
Telling oils apart
Bottles in a range often look identical, so colour coding and clear names on the box do the sorting.
A common approach is one box design for the whole range with a colour band, icon or panel that changes per oil. This keeps the brand consistent while making each oil easy to find on a shelf or in a drawer. Put the oil name on at least two faces so it reads whichever way the box is stored.
Making room for safety text
Essential oils often carry safety and hazard text, so give it space before the rest of the panels are laid out.
What an oil carries depends on how it is sold - as a cosmetic, an aromatherapy product or a fragrance ingredient - and some oils come with hazard symbols or warnings about skin contact and children. That text can be long, so we give it a full panel rather than a strip along the base.

Box style FAQsWe’ll confirm the exact details that apply to your structure and volume.
Read all frequently asked questionsCan an essential oil box have a window?+
Yes, though for most oils we recommend a solid carton. Essential oils are sensitive to light, which is why they come in amber or cobalt glass, and a closed box keeps shop lighting off them too. If you want the bottle seen, we can cut a small window that shows the glass and label while most of the bottle stays covered.
What size carton fits a 10ml essential oil bottle with a roller or dropper cap?+
We size it to the bottle with its actual cap fitted, because a 10ml bottle can be short and wide with a screw cap or tall and thin as a roller. Dropper and tamper-evident caps add height too. If your range uses both styles, we make two carton sizes, or one size with an insert that lifts the shorter bottle so it does not rattle. Send us each bottle's measurements with the cap on.
Do essential oil bottles need to stand upright in the box?+
We recommend it, especially for single cartons that may be stored for a long time. An orifice reducer slows the flow but is not a full seal, so a bottle lying down can creep oil past it. We make the holes in an upright insert deep enough to hold each bottle at its shoulder. Sets that show bottles lying down work too, as long as the caps are tight.
Can essential oil boxes be printed on kraft board?+
Yes, and kraft gives the natural look many oil brands want. Colours print darker and duller on brown board, which matters when colour bands tell the oils apart, as similar shades can merge. We print a white ink layer under each colour band, or use stronger contrasting colours, so every oil stays easy to pick out on the kraft background.
