Cologne boxes protect a heavy glass bottle with a spray atomiser and often a weighted cap, which makes them one of the most protective boxes in beauty. They range from a printed folding carton with a fitted insert to a rigid box with a magnetic lid and a lined cradle. Fragrance is often bought as a gift, so the box carries much of the perceived value of the bottle inside.

Artwork and materialsCologne is often given as a gift, so the outer panels, the lid and the inside of a rigid box all carry the value of the bottle within. Our packaging guides cover sizing, materials, print, and cost in more depth.
Outer panels and inside lid
On a folding carton we set the artwork across every panel and around any tear strip; on a rigid box we prepare the wrap paper and inside lid, with the insert's bottle cut-out lined up to the design.
Explore print and finishesBoard, wraps and decoration
Paperboard cartons take foil and embossing cleanly for retail shelves, while wrapped rigid board gives a heavier gift feel. Card, pulp or foam cradles change what is seen first when the lid comes off.

Cost factorsEvery project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.
- Build
- A folding carton is the economical choice; a rigid box with a magnetic lid costs much more per unit.
- Cradle
- An insert shaped to an unusual bottle needs its own cutting or moulding tool.
- Board weight
- Heavy glass needs thicker board or a double-wall insert to stop it pushing through.
- Decoration
- Foil and embossing are common on fragrance and each needs its own die.
Choosing this format
Protecting heavy fragrance glass
Fragrance glass is thick and heavy, so the insert takes the load rather than the outer walls.
A cologne bottle can weigh far more than its size suggests because of thick glass and a weighted cap. If it moves inside the box, it hits the walls hard enough to dent a carton or chip the glass.
A cradle that grips the bottle at the base and the shoulder spreads that load. Board inserts suit simple shapes; moulded pulp or foam inserts suit sculpted bottles with curves and facets.
- Grip at base and shoulder
- Board for simple shapes
- Pulp or foam for sculpted glass
Clearing the atomiser and cap
Measure the bottle with the cap fitted, and check the cap does not rest on the carton top.
Fragrance caps are often oversized, magnetic or sculpted, and some sit loosely over the atomiser. A carton top that presses on the cap can push it down onto the spray head and release fragrance in transit.
Send us the height with the cap fitted and we leave a small gap above it, holding the bottle at the shoulder so it cannot rise into the lid.
Shelf carton or keepsake rigid box?
A carton suits retail shelves; a rigid box suits gifts and launches where the box is kept.
Most fragrance on a retail shelf comes in a folding carton, often with a sealed film wrap, because it stacks neatly and is light to ship. A rigid box with a magnetic lid feels like a gift in itself and is often kept after the bottle is used.
Fragrance contains alcohol, which carriers can class as a flammable liquid, so the outer pack may need handling marks. Plan the shipping carton with that in mind and leave clear space for any labels it has to carry.
Questions about cologne boxes.
Box style FAQsWe’ll confirm the exact details that apply to your structure and volume.
Read all frequently asked questionsCan a cologne box show it has not been opened?+
Yes. We can build a tear strip into the carton, or you can add a seal sticker across the opening, so the customer knows the bottle has not been touched. That matters for something so often bought as a gift. Both do the job of a film wrap without the plastic. A tear strip is part of the box design, so tell us at the start.
How do you pack a cologne gift set with aftershave or shower gel?+
We put the fragrance bottle in the centre of a fitted insert with the second product beside it, in a windowed carton or a rigid box with a lift-off lid. The fragrance glass is the heaviest piece, so we cut its space to grip it most firmly, with nothing else touching it. Send us every item's measurements with caps fitted and we draw the insert around them.
Can a cologne box be shaped like the bottle?+
Yes, in a few ways. We can make a hexagonal or angled carton, cut a window to the bottle's outline, or keep a rectangular box and shape the insert so the bottle sits in its own outline when the lid comes off. That last option is the most popular, because a fully custom outer shape is slower to fold and pack.
How are discovery sets and travel sprays boxed?+
We pack sample vials together in a slim box or drawer box with a slot for each vial, and can add a printed card naming each scent. Vials are light, so a card insert holds them well, and we leave room so the lid does not press on the spray tops. A single travel spray usually goes in a shorter version of your main carton, so it matches the full-size bottle.
