Lipstick boxes are among the smallest cartons in cosmetics, sized closely around a bullet case or a gloss tube. The challenge is fitting a shade name, a colour swatch and the required text onto panels a couple of centimetres wide. Single lipsticks usually go in a tuck-end carton, while sets and gift editions use small rigid or magnetic boxes with an insert.

Small box, exact shade.
Artwork and materialsLipstick cartons are tiny, so the shade swatch, the shade name and the required text all need a planned place on panels a couple of centimetres wide. Our packaging guides cover sizing, materials, print, and cost in more depth.
Swatch, name and end panel
We place the swatch where it is seen first, set the shade name and number on the end panel for drawers and counters, and fit ingredients and batch code on the remaining panels.
Explore print and finishesMetallic boards and foil
Plain paperboard gives the truest swatch colour, metallic and specialty boards add shine for holiday editions, and rigid board suits sets. A single foil or embossed detail lifts a small box without crowding it.

Cost factorsEvery project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.
- Shade count
- Each shade with its own printed swatch is a separate design version to set up and check.
- Board
- Metallic or specialty boards cost more than plain SBS but give a premium look without foil.
- Set boxes
- Gift sets in rigid or magnetic boxes with inserts use more board and more handwork.
- Finishes
- Foil, embossing and spot UV on such a small box need precise registration, which adds care.
Choosing this format
Fitting a small carton
Lipstick cases are small and slightly irregular, so measure the case itself and keep the fit close.
Bullet cases are round or square, and some have a wider cap or a decorative base. A loose carton lets the case slide and the box look half empty when opened. Measure the widest point and the full length, and keep the clearance small so the case sits snug without being hard to pull out.
Glosses and balms in tubes or pots need their own carton sizes, even within one brand.
- Measure the widest point of the case
- Keep clearance small
- Glosses and balms need their own sizes
Printing a shade that matches
The swatch on the box is a print colour, not the lipstick itself, so proof shades carefully.
Customers often choose a shade from the box, so a swatch that prints too warm or too dull leads to disappointment. Print colours vary with board and coating: the same red looks different on gloss and on matte stock. Send us a colour reference for each shade and we set the swatches to it, keeping the whole range on one board and coating so the shades print alike.
A shade name and number on the end panel helps both shoppers and staff find the right box in a drawer.
Sets and gift editions
Lipstick sets suit small rigid or magnetic boxes with a row of slots, so each case sits upright.
A row of three to six lipsticks standing in a card or foam insert shows the shade range at once when the lid opens. Holiday and limited editions often use metallic papers or a single foil detail to look special without changing the structure.
Planning the small print
Small cartons still carry the full label text, so plan where it goes before the design starts.
Ingredient lists, net contents, the maker's details and a batch code are the usual items for a lipstick. A fold-out panel can add room on a box this small, and we check on the proof that every line is large enough to read.
Questions about lipstick boxes.
Box style FAQsWe’ll confirm the exact details that apply to your structure and volume.
Read all frequently asked questionsWill the lipstick cap stay on inside the box?+
Yes. We size the carton close to the full length of the case, so the cap has no room to slide off in transit and the bullet cannot smear the inside. Check that caps click on firmly before boxing. If you want buyers to see the carton has not been opened, we can add a small seal sticker across the flap.
Can you add foil or embossing to a lipstick box?+
Do you make boxes for liquid lipstick and lip gloss?+
Yes. Liquid lipsticks and glosses come in slim tubes with a long applicator cap, so we make the carton taller and narrower than a bullet carton. We size it to the full length with the cap on and to the widest point, which may be the cap. A close fit or a neck insert stops the tube sliding and the cap working loose. We also make dedicated lip gloss boxes.
Is a magnetic box worth it for a single lipstick?+
For a launch, a PR mailing or a gift edition, yes, because a small rigid box feels far more special than a tuck carton. For everyday retail it is bulky and costly for such a small product. We usually recommend a tuck carton for the shelf and a magnetic box or rigid box only for sets and limited editions.
How should lip balm in a pot or tin be boxed?+
Pots and tins are short and wide, so we make them a cube-shaped carton or a slim sleeve rather than a lipstick carton. A carton adds room for ingredients and directions that a small lid cannot hold, and a snug fit stops the lid twisting open. For balm sticks, we make lip balm boxes sized to the tube.
