Collapsible rigid boxes, also called foldable rigid boxes, are built from the same thick wrapped board as a set-up box, but with hinged walls that fold down flat. They arrive in a fraction of the space, are stored flat, and lock into a firm box at packing time - usually with a magnetic flap lid. They suit brands that want a premium box without paying to ship and store air.

Artwork and materialsArtwork wraps the outer walls, lid flap and inside, just as on a glued rigid box. The inside of the flap is the best spot for a message, seen as the box opens. Our packaging guides cover sizing, materials, print, and cost in more depth.
Wrap, flap and inside walls
We set your artwork across the outer wrap, the magnetic flap and the inside walls. We keep key artwork away from the hinge lines where the walls fold, so the design stays crisp every time the box is set up.
Explore print and finishesPrinted, textured or kraft wraps
Printed wraps give full-colour branding, textured papers add a tactile, crafted feel, and kraft wraps give a natural, understated look. Foil and embossing on the lid bring a logo forward.

Cost factorsEvery project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.
- Size and board thickness
- Larger boxes and thicker board use more material and take more care to fold accurately.
- Wrap paper
- Plain coloured paper costs least; printed, textured or specialty papers add cost.
- Closure
- Magnets set into the flap are an extra part and an extra step compared with a plain tuck.
- Finishes
- Foil, embossing and spot UV each need their own tooling and add a production step.
Choosing this format
How a collapsible rigid box folds flat
The walls are hinged to the base with flexible strips, so the box folds flat and then stands up and locks.
Each wall is a separate piece of greyboard joined to the base by a hinge of wrapping paper or tape. Flat, the box is barely thicker than its lid. At packing, the walls are lifted and held by double-sided tape strips or tabs, and the lid flap - often with magnets - closes over the top.
Once set up it feels much like a glued rigid box: thick, square and heavy in the hand. The difference is in the corners, which are folded rather than fixed.
- Hinged walls fold flat
- Tape strips or tabs lock it up
- Magnetic flap lid is common
Why choose collapsible over a set-up box?
Shipping and storage: a flat box takes a fraction of the space of a fixed one.
A fixed rigid box ships as it will be used, which means paying to move and store mostly air. Collapsible boxes stack flat on a pallet and on a shelf, which matters when the boxes travel a long way before they are packed, or when space is tight.
The trade-off is a little packing time per box, and corners that are folded rather than glued, which a close look can tell apart.
Setting one up at packing
Plan for a few seconds per box, and show whoever packs which way the walls fold.
Most collapsible boxes are set up by hand: lift the walls, peel the tape strips and press them home. It is quick once learned, but on large runs it adds up, so allow for it when planning packing time.
A box set up the wrong way round can still close, but the lid magnets will not meet. We show the hinge lines and tape strips on the dieline, so you can see on the digital proof how the walls go up.
Is collapsible strong enough to post?
It is strong once set up, but like any rigid box it should travel inside a shipping carton.
The board is as thick as a set-up box, so it resists crushing on a shelf and in a bag. In a courier network, though, the wrap paper scuffs and the corners can dent, so ship it inside a plain shipping box or mailer.

Read all frequently asked questionsHow does a collapsible rigid box go from flat to set up?+
In a few seconds. The walls fold up from the base and the tape strips along their edges are pressed home, which holds them in place for good. Once set up, it stands as firmly as a glued rigid box. If you want customers to fold the box away and use it again, we recommend our ribbon pull collapsible box, which sets up and folds flat without tape.
Is a collapsible rigid box strong enough for heavier products?+
Yes, for most gifts, apparel and cosmetics. Once set up, the walls stand on the base much like a glued rigid box. For dense products such as bottles or tools, we use thicker board and add an insert that braces the walls from inside, or we recommend a fixed rigid box. Send us the weight of your heaviest item and we build the box around it.
Can a collapsible rigid box have a fitted insert?+
Yes. We make the insert as a separate part that drops in after the box is set up, since a fixed insert would stop the walls folding flat. A snug board or foam insert also braces the walls from inside, so the box feels even firmer. We size it to the set-up box's inner dimensions, allowing for wall thickness and wrap, so it sits square.
Can the inside of a collapsible rigid box be printed?+
Yes. We can wrap the inside walls and the lid flap in printed paper, just as on a glued rigid box. We keep key artwork away from the hinge lines where the walls meet the base, because the paper flexes there when the box folds. The inside of the lid flap is the best place for a message, and we show the whole layout on your proof.
