Ribbon pull collapsible boxes are rigid gift boxes that arrive completely flat and spring into shape when a ribbon is pulled. A ribbon threaded through the walls draws them upright and holds them, so there is no tape to peel and no folding to learn. They give the look of a wrapped rigid gift box with the shipping and storage of a flat pack, and the pop-up itself becomes a small moment for whoever sets the box up.

Artwork and materialsArtwork wraps the outer walls, lid and inside, with the ribbon bow placed as part of the design. The box opens like a gift, so the reveal deserves care. Our packaging guides cover sizing, materials, print, and cost in more depth.
Wrap, lid and ribbon position
We set your artwork across the outer wrap, magnetic flap and inside panels. We place the ribbon bow or tab when we design the wrap, so it never covers your logo, and keep key artwork off the fold lines.

Satin ribbon gives a soft sheen, grosgrain gives a crisp, textured line, and both can be colour-matched to the wrap. Textured and specialty papers add feel, with foil and emboss for names and logos.

Cost factorsEvery project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.
- Ribbon mechanism
- Threading the ribbon through the walls is hand work, and it adds a part a tape-strip box does not have.
- Ribbon type
- Plain satin costs least; printed, branded or wider ribbons cost more.
- Size and board
- Larger boxes need thicker board and a stronger ribbon to pull the walls up evenly.
- Wrap and finishes
- Specialty papers, foil and embossing each add material or a production step.

How the ribbon pull works
A ribbon runs through the base and walls; pulling it draws the walls upright and holds them there.
The box is built like other collapsible rigid boxes, with walls hinged to the base. The difference is a ribbon threaded through small holes or channels in the walls and tied off underneath or inside. Lying flat, the ribbon is slack. Pull its free end and the walls lift together, and the tension keeps them standing.
Most designs finish with a magnetic flap lid that closes over the raised walls and helps hold the shape.
- Ribbon threaded through the walls
- One pull lifts every wall
- Tension holds the shape
Ribbon pull or tape strips?
Tape strips lock a collapsible box more firmly; a ribbon sets it up faster and can be done by anyone, with no instructions.
A standard collapsible rigid box uses double-sided tape strips, which must be peeled and pressed in the right order. That is fine in a packing room but awkward for a customer. A ribbon pull box sets up in a second, so it suits boxes sent flat to the end customer - gift boxes, hampers and bridesmaid boxes they fill themselves.
Tape-strip boxes, once set, are usually locked for good. Many ribbon pull boxes can be folded flat again by loosening the ribbon, so they can be stored and reused.
Choosing the ribbon
The ribbon is both the mechanism and part of the look, so it has to be strong enough to pull and pleasant to see.
Satin looks soft and glossy; grosgrain is ribbed, grips better and wears less. Pick a ribbon width and strength that suits the box size - a big box needs a stronger ribbon to pull all four walls up evenly.
The free end often finishes in a bow or a tab on the outside. A ribbon colour matched to the wrap, or printed with the brand name, makes the set-up part of the gift.
Making the pop-up moment count
When the recipient sets up the box, the pull is the first thing they do - so treat it as part of the unboxing.
Brands sending gift boxes flat often print a small 'pull here' note on the ribbon tab or base. Seeing a flat sheet become a solid box is surprising, and it is the kind of moment people film.
A ribbon pull box holds well once set, but heavy gifts can strain the walls if the ribbon is loose. Tell us the heaviest gift that will go inside and we choose the board and ribbon to hold it.
Questions about ribbon pull collapsible boxes.
Box style FAQsWe’ll confirm the exact details that apply to your structure and volume.
Read all frequently asked questionsDoes the ribbon have to stay tied for the box to keep its shape?+
Yes, the ribbon is what holds the walls up, which is how the box springs into shape with one pull. The magnetic flap lid then closes over the top edges and keeps it square. We recommend finishing the ribbon with a firm bow or knot, so the box holds its shape while it is on display or being carried.
Is the ribbon visible when a ribbon pull box is closed?+
Usually the free end shows on the outside as a bow or a tab, while the rest runs hidden through the walls or under the base. We can also tuck the end inside, so the closed box looks like any rigid gift box. We place the bow when we design the wrap, so it never sits over your logo.
Can a ribbon pull box be posted flat to the person who will fill it?+
Yes, and that is one of the main reasons to choose it. Flat, the boxes fit in a slim mailer, and the recipient sets each one up in a second with one pull, no instructions needed. Once set up and filled, we recommend sending the box inside a shipping box like any rigid box, so the wrap and the ribbon arrive unmarked.
Which ribbon is best for a ribbon pull box?+
We recommend grosgrain or a woven ribbon with sealed ends, because it grips well, holds a firm bow and stays neat through repeated pulls. Satin looks glossy and suits bridal and luxury gifts, and we seal its ends so they do not fray. We can match the ribbon colour to your wrap or logo for a finished look.
Ribbon pull box or magnetic rigid box for bridesmaid and wedding boxes?+
For boxes posted or carried to each person, we recommend the ribbon pull box: it travels flat and pops up as part of the surprise. A fixed magnetic box feels solid from the first moment, but it takes more space and costs more to send. If the couple fill the boxes and hand them over, both work well, and the choice comes down to the look.
