Rigid sleeve boxes pair a rigid box - usually a lift-off lid and base - with a separate printed sleeve that slides over it like a jacket. The sleeve carries the brand, the product name or a seasonal design, while the box underneath can stay plain and elegant. Sliding the sleeve off before lifting the lid adds a step to the opening, and one box can be dressed for different products or seasons just by changing the sleeve.

Change the sleeve, keep the box.
Artwork and materialsThe sleeve carries your brand, product name and details, while the box underneath can stay plain and elegant. The sleeve is where most of the design work goes. Our packaging guides cover sizing, materials, print, and cost in more depth.
Sleeve front, back and box
We set your branding and product name on the sleeve front, with barcode and details on the back. The rigid box underneath gets its own wrap, and any seal can hide neatly under the sleeve.
Explore print and finishesPaperboard or rigid sleeve
A paperboard sleeve gives crisp print and low-cost changes for seasons or products, while a rigid sleeve gives a weightier feel. Specialty and textured papers on the box underneath add depth.

Cost factorsEvery project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.
- Two parts
- The rigid box and the sleeve are made separately, so there are two sets of material and work.
- Sleeve board
- A paperboard sleeve costs least; a wrapped rigid sleeve feels heavier and costs more.
- Print on both
- Printing the box and the sleeve means two print set-ups instead of one.
- Finishes
- Foil, embossing or a window cut in the sleeve each add tooling and a production step.
Choosing this format
Inside the sleeve: a complete rigid box
A closed rigid box sits inside an open-ended sleeve, which slides off to let the lid lift.
The box is a normal rigid box, most often a lift-off lid and base. The sleeve is a tube sized to slide over it with a little clearance, open at both ends. It is held on by its snug fit, so it stays put in a bag or on a shelf but slides off easily by hand.

Rigid sleeve box or drawer box?
In a drawer box the tray slides out of the sleeve; in a sleeve box the whole box slides out and then opens.
A drawer box has no lid: the sleeve is part of the structure and the tray is pulled out of it. A rigid sleeve box is a complete box on its own, with the sleeve added as an outer layer. Choose a drawer box for the sliding reveal, and a sleeve box when you want a lid plus an outer layer you can change.
Why brands use a separate sleeve
The sleeve can change while the box stays the same.
One plain rigid box with a foil logo can carry a different printed sleeve for each product, scent or season. That keeps the costlier rigid part the same across a range and moves the variety onto the cheaper, quicker sleeve.
A window cut in the sleeve, or a sleeve that covers only part of the box, lets the box colour show through as part of the design.
Sizing the sleeve to the finished box
Too tight and the sleeve tears or sticks; too loose and it slips off when the box is tipped.
The wrap paper adds thickness to every surface, so the sleeve has to be sized to the finished box, not the bare board. We draw the box and the sleeve together, so the clearance is set from the finished sizes, and you check it on the dieline and digital proof.
Questions about rigid sleeve boxes.
Box style FAQsWe’ll confirm the exact details that apply to your structure and volume.
Read all frequently asked questionsShould the outer sleeve be paperboard or rigid board?+
We make both. A paperboard sleeve is thin, prints sharply and is easy to change for each product or season, which is the usual reason to use a sleeve at all. A wrapped rigid sleeve is thicker and feels as solid as the box, but costs more and adds bulk. For a sleeve that varies across a range, we recommend paperboard; for one fixed premium design, rigid suits.
Can the sleeve carry the barcode and product details?+
Yes, and it often does. Putting the barcode, product name, variant and contents on the sleeve lets one plain box serve a whole range. Those details leave with the sleeve, so if the box itself must identify the product once the sleeve is off, we can add a small label or a printed panel on its base.
Can you print new sleeves for rigid boxes I already have in stock?+
Yes, that is one of the main strengths of the format. As long as the box size stays the same, we can print new sleeves for a season, a promotion or a gift edition to slide onto boxes you already have. We work from your original dieline and keep the same clearance, so every new sleeve fits.
Does a rigid sleeve box work on a retail shelf?+
Yes. The sleeve gives a flat printed face for display, and the box underneath protects the product. We size the sleeve snugly so it stays put when shoppers pick the box up. If you want to show whether a box has been opened, we can add a seal sticker across the lid join, hidden under the sleeve.
Can a sleeve go over a magnetic or hinged rigid box?+
Yes. The most common pairing is a lift-off lid and base, because the sleeve also holds the lid on. On a magnetic flap box, we allow a little more clearance so the sleeve slides over the flap edge. We recommend leaving the sleeve off boxes with ribbons, handles or closures that stick out, since they catch as the sleeve slides.
