BoxifyMEYour brand, just way more boxified

Cake boxes carry whole and tiered cakes from the bakery to the table. They need a rigid, flat base so the cake does not flex, enough height that the lid clears piped icing and toppers, and an opening wide enough to slide the cake in on its board. Many have a window so the decoration can be seen without opening the box.

What changes the price.

Cost factors

Every project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.

Height and footprint
Tall and tiered cake boxes use much more board than a standard sponge box.
Board strength
Heavy cakes may need corrugated board rather than a single sheet of paperboard.
Window
A film window adds a die-cut and a patching step.
Print
Printed outsides cost more than plain white stock boxes with a sticker.

Choosing this format

Sizing a cake box from the board up

Measure the cake board, not the cake, then add space on every side and above the highest point.

A cake sits on a drum or board that is usually wider than the sponge. The box should fit that board with a small margin, so the cake cannot slide, and leave clear air above the tallest rosette, candle or topper. Send us the board size and the height to the top of the tallest decoration, and we size the box from those two numbers.

Tiered cakes are often delivered in tall boxes with removable fronts, or assembled on site, because lifting a heavy cake down into a deep box risks damage.

  • Fit the board, not the sponge
  • Clear the tallest decoration
  • Consider a drop-front for tiers

Fronts, lids and handles

How the cake goes in matters more than how the box looks closed.

Lift-off lids let the cake be lowered straight down onto the base. Front-opening boxes let it slide in on its board, which is gentler on tall decoration. Carry handles are handy for small cakes but should not be relied on for heavy ones.

Buttercream, cream and grease

Cakes are moist and fatty, so the inside face should resist grease marks.

Plain board can show grease spots where buttercream touches it. A coated food-grade inner surface keeps the box clean, and a separate cake board stops the base from softening under a moist sponge.

Fresh-cream cakes are chilled, so the box may also see condensation when it leaves the fridge, and for those we make it in coated board.

Box style FAQs

Read all frequently asked questions
Why are cake boxes square when most cakes are round?+

Square boxes fold from one flat sheet, stack steadily and sit flat in a car or fridge. The corners also leave room for fingers to slide under the cake board and lift the cake out without touching the sides. We size the box snugly to your cake board, so a round cake is held at four points and cannot slide. We also make round boxes.

Can a cake box carry a heavy or tiered cake?+

Yes. For heavy fruit cakes, stacked cakes and tall tiers we make cake boxes in corrugated board, which stays rigid when lifted. The cake board carries the cake itself, so we recommend a firm board underneath and lifting the box from below with both hands. Tell us the cake's size and rough weight and we choose the board to suit.

How should a boxed cake travel in a car?+

Flat and low. Car seats slope backwards, so we recommend the boot floor or the front footwell, with a non-slip mat under the box and out of direct sun. For tall or tiered cakes we can make a box with a front panel that opens, so the cake slides out at the venue instead of being lifted over the walls.

Can a cake box go in the fridge with the cake inside?+

Yes. We can make cake boxes in coated board, which copes with the condensation that forms when the box comes out of the fridge. If your customers will keep the cake in a home fridge, tell us, because a tall cake box can be taller than a fridge shelf and we can size it to fit. Keep the lid closed while the cake comes up to room temperature.
