Lunch boxes hold one person's meal - a sandwich, salad, wrap or hot dish with a drink and a snack - in a single box that is easy to hand out and carry. They are used for boxed office lunches, events, school trips, airline and rail catering and meal-prep brands. Clamshells, handled carry boxes and compartment trays are the common builds.

One meal, one well-branded box.
Artwork and materialsArtwork covers the clamshell lid or the sides of a handled box, with a plain panel for a name, diet code or menu choice. Clear labelling space matters as much as the design. Our packaging guides cover sizing, materials, print, and cost in more depth.
Lid, sides and label area
We set your brand on the lid and sides, leave a clear panel for names or diet codes, and can design a seal sticker across the opening that carries a name as well.
Explore print and finishesSBS, kraft and E-flute
Grease-resistant SBS shows crisp colour and handles hot or dressed food, kraft gives a natural deli look, and E-flute corrugated makes a sturdy handled carry box with room on the sides for branding.

Cost factorsEvery project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.
- Build
- A simple clamshell costs less than a handled carry box or one with a compartment insert.
- Grease barrier
- Hot or dressed food needs coated or lined board.
- Compartments
- Separating a main, a side and a snack takes an insert or a moulded tray.
- Personalisation
- Printed names or menus per box are a different job from one shared design.
Choosing this format
Keeping the parts of a lunch apart
A boxed lunch usually holds several items, so a divider or compartment tray stops the salad meeting the cake.
A typical boxed lunch has a main, a side, a snack and sometimes a drink. Without compartments, dressings and juices travel. A folded board divider is the simplest fix; a moulded fibre tray inside the box holds wetter food.
- Divider or compartment tray
- Sealed pots for dressings
- Room for napkin and cutlery
Names and diet codes for group orders
At an event or office drop, the box needs a clear spot for a name, dietary code or menu choice.
Boxed lunches for groups are sorted by person and by diet - vegetarian, gluten free, nut free. Leave a plain panel or a printed label area, and consider colour-coding boxes or stickers by diet so they can be handed out quickly.
If the lunches are sold pre-packed, we leave space for the ingredient and allergen details they need to carry, so a label never has to cover the branding.
Clamshell, carry box or gable?
Clamshells stack well for drop-offs; handled boxes suit people who carry their lunch away.
A clamshell with a locking tab stacks neatly in a delivery crate and opens flat to eat from. A handled carry box or gable box is easier to take on a trip or to a desk, and has more room on the sides for branding.
For hot food or anything oily, the board needs a grease-resistant coating, which we confirm is suitable for food contact before production.
Questions about lunch boxes.
Box style FAQsWe’ll confirm the exact details that apply to your structure and volume.
Read all frequently asked questionsCan a lunch box hold hot and cold food together?+
Yes, in their own spaces. We can add a compartment insert that gives hot food a vented section so steam escapes, and keeps cold items such as salad and dessert in sealed pots away from the heat. The board itself will not keep food hot or cold for long, so lunch boxes suit food eaten soon after packing.
What size lunch box fits a sandwich, a side and a drink?+
We size it from the tallest item, which is usually the drink. A can or small bottle either stands upright in a deep, handled box, or lies alongside the food in a flatter one. Send us your largest sandwich pack and side pot, and we add room for a napkin and cutlery before fixing the size.
Can a lunch box go in the microwave?+
Yes, if we make it for that. Tell us your customers will reheat, and we choose a board and coating suited to microwave use, with no metal handles, foil lining or film window. For our standard printed lunch boxes, we can print a short note on the lid asking customers to move the food to a plate first.
Do lunch boxes stay closed during delivery?+
Yes. Our clamshells close with a locking tab or tuck, and handled boxes lock as the handles come together. For group orders and events, a paper seal sticker across the opening also shows the box has not been opened since it left the kitchen, and it can carry the person's name or diet code.
