Popcorn boxes range from the classic open-top cinema carton to closed tuck-top boxes for gourmet popcorn sold on a shelf. Served popcorn needs board that copes with butter and oil without soaking through, while packaged popcorn usually sits in a sealed bag inside a printed carton. They are also a favourite for parties, weddings and promotional giveaways.

Artwork and materialsPopcorn boxes suit bold, full-wrap designs. On serving boxes the design wraps the flared sides, while tuck-top retail boxes add front panels for the flavour and pack details. Our packaging guides cover sizing, materials, print, and cost in more depth.
Flared sides and tuck tops
We wrap your design across the flared sides of a serving box so it lines up at the seam, and on tuck-top boxes we set the flavour, brand and any window on the front.
Explore print and finishesCoated SBS, kraft or boxboard
Grease-resistant SBS keeps bold colour clean against butter, kraft gives a vintage fairground look, and coated folding boxboard suits retail boxes holding a sealed bag, where the print can take centre stage.

Cost factorsEvery project is quoted individually. These are the choices that move the price on almost every order.
- Grease resistance
- Coated or grease-resistant board for buttered popcorn costs more than plain board.
- Size
- Bucket-sized serving boxes use much more board than a small favour box.
- Closure
- Open tops are the simplest; tuck tops and handles add die complexity.
- Bold full-wrap designs, common on popcorn, need full ink coverage.
Choosing this format
Butter, oil and the board
Served popcorn is oily, so the board needs a grease-resistant coating or it will stain and soften.
Butter and oil wick into uncoated board and show through the print within minutes. Cinema and event boxes usually use board with a grease-resistant coating on the inside.
Caramel and gourmet popcorn sold in a sealed bag does not touch the box, so plain board works and the money can go on print instead. Where popcorn does touch the board, the coating has to be suitable for food contact, and we confirm that before production.
- Coated board for buttered popcorn
- Sealed bag for shelf popcorn
- Coating matched to the topping
Serving box or retail box?
Serving boxes are open and quick to fill; retail boxes close and protect a bag on a shelf.
The cinema-style box has an open top and flared sides so it can be scooped into and held in one hand. They ship flat and are folded up at the counter, so a fast, simple fold matters on busy nights.
Retail popcorn usually uses a tuck-top carton or a window box that shows the flavour, with the popcorn sealed in a bag to keep it crisp.
Popcorn boxes as favours and giveaways
Small, printed popcorn boxes are an easy branded giveaway for weddings, launches and sports events.
Favour-sized boxes hold a handful, and we can print a run with names and a date, or a sponsor logo. Because they are cheap to fill and hand out, they work well at stands and screenings where people take something with them.
Questions about popcorn boxes.
Box style FAQsWe’ll confirm the exact details that apply to your structure and volume.
Read all frequently asked questionsWhat size popcorn box do I need?+
We size popcorn boxes by the volume of popped corn, not by weight, because popcorn is mostly air. A favour box holds a handful, while cinema sizes run from a small single serving to a large sharing size. Tell us the portions you sell and how heaped you serve them, and we size each box to match.
Can popcorn go into the box hot from the machine?+
Yes, for our open-top serving boxes, because the steam escapes straight up and the inside coating stops warm butter soaking in. We confirm the board and coating are suitable for direct food contact before production. For a closed tuck-top box, we recommend letting the popcorn cool fully before closing, so it stays crisp.
How do popcorn boxes compare with paper popcorn bags?+
We make both. Paper bags cost less and store flatter, which suits small portions and quick sales. A popcorn box stands up on a lap or table, keeps its shape and gives a flat panel to print on, which suits cinemas, events and branded giveaways. Many venues use bags for small sizes and boxes for the rest.
Are popcorn boxes recyclable?+
Yes. We make popcorn boxes from paperboard, which goes in with paper recycling as long as it is not heavily soaked in butter or oil. For the grease barrier we can use a water-based coating instead of a plastic film, which keeps the board easy to recycle. Favour boxes and boxes holding bagged popcorn stay clean and recycle easily.
