Choosing household & cleaning packaging

Which box suits sprays, refills, tablets, sheets and sponges?

Each part of a cleaning range has its own best fit: folding cartons for tablets, sheets and small bottles, hang tab or window boxes for sponges and cloths, mailers for posted refills and shipping boxes for bottles in quantity.

Dishwasher tablets, laundry sheets, pods and small concentrate bottles are light, regular in shape and sold from a shelf, which is the job Custom Folding Cartons are made for. A tub of tablets your customer dips into daily and tops up from a refill pouch suits Flip Top Boxes, where the lid stays attached and closes again after each use.

Sponges and cloths are chosen by colour and texture, so Custom Hang Tab Boxes put them on a peg wall and Custom Window Boxes let them show on a shelf. Refills sold online go out in Custom Mailer Boxes, wholesale cases of bottles travel in Custom Shipping Boxes, Custom Display Boxes gather sachets and small sprays near the till, and Custom Labels & Stickers go on the bottles and pouches themselves.

Can a folding carton hold a trigger spray or a heavy bottle of cleaner?

Yes. We size the carton around the whole bottle with its trigger head fitted, and for a heavy fill we add an auto-lock base, or build the box in corrugated board when the weight calls for it.

A trigger spray is the awkward shape in any cleaning range: a slim bottle under a wide head, with a nozzle that juts out to one side. Send us its measurements at the widest points with the trigger on, and we draw the carton around them. An insert that holds the neck keeps the bottle upright and the head clear of the board.

Liquids are dense, so a bottle of cleaner weighs far more than a box of tablets the same size. For those cartons we recommend an auto-lock bottom, which forms itself as the carton is squared up and carries more weight than a tuck end. Heavier still, we make the box in corrugated board, which keeps the panels straight on a stacked shelf.

How do refill and concentrate brands post their refills?

In a mailer box sized to the usual order, with an insert that gives each refill its own space, so a month of refills arrives standing in neat rows rather than rolling loose.

We size Custom Mailer Boxes to the number of refills in a typical order. When the order is slim, such as sachets, laundry sheets or flat refill pouches, we can make the mailer in thin board sized to go through a letterbox.

Bottled refills travel best held apart, so we cut a corrugated or cardboard insert with a space for each one. The mailer closes with a tuck front and locking ears without tape, we can add a peel-and-seal strip or a seal sticker so your customer can see it has not been opened, and a plain zone on the lid takes the courier label. Inside the lid, we can print your steps for mixing the concentrate and filling the bottle, so the instructions arrive with every refill.

Will a tablet or laundry sheet carton hold up in a damp kitchen or utility room?

Yes. We finish these cartons with a lamination that guards the print against scuffs and moisture, while the tablets or sheets stay in the sealed inner bag or wrap that keeps them dry.

These boxes live under the sink or by the washing machine. Lamination bonds a thin, clear film over the print, which keeps moisture from marking the board, and gloss lamination wipes clean after a splash. If you would rather keep the board easier to recycle, a varnish protects the print from rubbing at a lighter level, and we help you choose.

The carton is the outer shell around the sealed inner pack, carrying your brand, the directions and the hazard wording. Because it is opened again and again, we recommend a tuck end that closes neatly every time, or Flip Top Boxes for a tub-style pack, sized so the inner bag folds over and sits flat under the lid.

  • Lamination keeps splashes off the print
  • The inner bag or wrap keeps the product dry
  • A tuck end or flip top that closes after every wash

What packaging suits sponges, scourers and cleaning cloths?

We recommend Custom Hang Tab Boxes for the peg wall and Custom Window Boxes for the shelf, because shoppers pick a sponge or cloth by its colour, its texture and how many come in the pack.

Sponges and cloths weigh little, so a single-layer hang tab is usually enough, and we fold the tab into a double layer for bigger multipacks. We set the box depth to your stockists' peg length and place any window below a band of solid board at the top, which keeps the box hanging straight.

On a shelf, a window over the most colourful face of the pack does the selling, and for sponges that are already wrapped we can leave it as an open cut-out with no film. Folded cloths slide neatly into a slim folding carton, with the count and the job they are for, such as kitchen, bathroom or glass, printed large on the front.

How much room does the hazard and usage wording need on a cleaning box?

As much as the wording you send us takes at a clear, readable size. We set it from your exact text and symbols before any artwork goes on, so it never has to be squeezed in at the end.

A cleaning product often carries more text than anything else in the aisle: directions, dilution for a concentrate, hazard wording and pictograms, storage advice, ingredients and your company details. Send us all of it in final form, with symbols as artwork files, and we give it its own panel, usually the back and one side, leaving the front for your brand, product name and scent.

We keep this text in dark ink on a plain background, away from folds, the glue seam and any window. The wording itself is yours: we lay it out exactly as supplied and show it at full size on the digital proof, where you check it word by word before we print. Bottles and pouches carry their own copy, so we print their labels in durable film, which copes with water and the squeeze of a soft bottle, with a blank panel for your date coder if you need one.

Can you make multipacks and bundles of cleaning products?

Yes. We make multipack cartons for tablets, sheets and sponges, bundle boxes with a fitted insert for mixed sets, and shipping boxes with dividers for cases of bottles.

A twin or triple pack of tablet cartons or sponge packs can go into one larger folding carton printed as a product in its own right. For seasonal bundles, Custom Sleeve Boxes put a printed sleeve over one plain tray, so a spring-clean set and a kitchen set can share a tray in different sleeves. Mixed sets, such as a spray, a refill and a cloth, get an insert with a space for each item.

For cases of bottles going to stockists, we make Custom Shipping Boxes with corrugated dividers that keep each bottle upright and apart, sized to fill your pallet footprint if you ship on pallets.

  • Twin and triple packs: one larger printed carton
  • Mixed sets: a fitted insert with a space per item
  • Cases of bottles: a shipping box with dividers

Should cleaning products sold online be packed differently from those on a shelf?

The retail carton can stay the same; the outer box is what changes. On a shelf the carton does the selling, and online it travels inside a mailer or shipping box that keeps it upright and in place.

Online, the customer has already chosen, so the outer box is about getting the order there tidy and the right way up. We size Custom Shipping Boxes and Custom Mailer Boxes around your retail cartons rather than the bare bottle, add dividers where several items travel together, and leave space on the outer faces for the courier label and this-way-up marks. Tell us how you split your sales and we plan the carton to read well on a shelf and pack snugly into its outer, so one stock of cartons serves every order.
