What is the difference between primary and secondary cosmetic packaging?
Primary packaging is the bottle, jar, tube or compact that holds your product; secondary packaging is the box around it, which carries the branding, the information and the protection - and that box is what we make.
The primary container touches the formula, so it is chosen for compatibility, dispensing and shelf life. The secondary box rarely touches the product at all. Its jobs are to protect the container in transit and on the shelf, to give space for information that will not fit on a small bottle, and to make the product look worth its price.
Because we design the box around the container, we size it from the final container. Send us the exact outer dimensions of your bottle, jar or tube, including the cap, pump or dropper, and we build the dieline around them. If the container is still changing, tell us what is likely to change and we will set the box size once it is confirmed, so the fit is right first time.
- Primary: holds and dispenses the formula
- Secondary: protects, informs and sells
- We size the box from your final container
How do I size a box around bottles, jars, tubes and droppers?
Send us the container's measurements at its widest points, including the closure, and we add just enough clearance for it to slide in without rattling - snug enough to feel premium, never tight.
Each kind of container needs its own approach. Dropper bottles for serums and oils are tall and narrow with a rubber bulb on top, so we allow depth for the bulb and keep the glass clear of the board. Jars for creams are short and wide, often with a lid larger than the base, so we size from the lid. Tubes for lotion, shampoo and foundation taper and flatten at one end. Lipsticks, mascaras and eyeliners are small cylinders that we size to very tight tolerances so they never feel loose.
That is why our range of beauty boxes is broad. Custom Serum Boxes and Custom Essential Oil Boxes are usually tall tuck-end cartons sized around a dropper, Custom Cream Boxes are low and square around a jar, and Custom Lipstick Boxes, Custom Mascara Boxes and Custom Eyeliner Boxes are slim cartons sized to the millimetre. We send you the dieline with your container's measurements marked on it, so you can check the fit before anything is printed.
We work in inside dimensions. Board has thickness, so a box quoted by its outside size holds less than it suggests. Giving us your container size and letting us work out the box is the surest way to a good fit.
Do cosmetic boxes need inserts?
We recommend an insert whenever the container is glass, oddly shaped, much smaller than the box or part of a set, because it holds each piece still and presents it properly.
A single tube in a snug carton often needs nothing extra. Glass perfume bottles, droppers, compacts and anything sold in a larger presentation box usually do. We make inserts from folded paperboard, corrugated board or foam, from a simple collar that holds a bottle upright to a full tray with a cavity for each item.
Inserts also shape the first impression. A bottle held centrally in a fitted cavity looks deliberate and premium the moment the lid comes off. That is why our Custom Perfume Boxes and Custom Cologne Boxes very often come with an insert, and so do palettes and kits in Custom Eyeshadow Boxes and Custom Makeup Boxes. We show the insert on the dieline and the digital proof, so you can see how each piece sits before production.
- Glass and droppers: we hold the neck and the base
- Sets: one cavity per item, sized to each
- Paperboard and pulp inserts keep the whole box paper-based
Where does the ingredient list go on a cosmetic box?
We give your product information its own panel from the start - usually the back or a side of the carton - so the ingredient list and everything else your product must carry fits at a clear, readable size.
Cosmetic boxes commonly carry an ingredient list, the net quantity, a batch code, a use-by date or period-after-opening symbol, directions and warnings where needed, and the contact details of the business responsible. When the container is too small for all of this, the outer box is where it goes, which is one of the main reasons small beauty products are sold boxed. Tell us what your label must include and we leave room for it and lay it out on the proof.
Skin care ingredient lists can be long, so we plan the space before the design rather than shrinking text to fit afterwards. The back and side panels of a tuck-end carton are the usual home, leaving the front for your brand and product name. If one box design covers several shades or scents, we set aside a clear spot for the details that change, so your whole range can share one layout.
Which finishes help beauty packaging stand out on the shelf?
We recommend one or two well-placed finishes - soft-touch lamination, foil, embossing or spot gloss - because a few deliberate touches do more than covering the whole box in effects.
Beauty buyers pick products up, turn them over and photograph them, so how a box feels and catches the light matters. Soft-touch or matte lamination gives a velvety surface that suits skin care and fragrance. Hot foil in gold, silver, rose gold or holographic draws the eye to your logo or product name. Embossing and debossing add a raised or pressed texture your customer can feel, and spot gloss creates contrast against a matte background.
Colour matters just as much as effects. Many beauty brands depend on a signature shade, so send us your Pantone references and we print to them, keeping the shade consistent across your cartons and labels. We mark every finish on the digital proof, so you can see exactly where the foil, embossing or gloss will sit. Finishes also change how colour reads: matte lamination softens printed colours slightly, while gloss makes them richer, and we take that into account when we set up your artwork.
- One or two finishes, placed on the parts you want noticed
- Soft-touch suits skin care and fragrance
- Matte lamination softens colour; gloss deepens it
How should I package beauty sets, gift boxes and PR kits?
We make sets and PR kits in a sturdier box with a fitted insert, because they hold several items, travel by post and are often opened on camera.
A gift set or seasonal bundle groups products that normally sell alone. The box has to hold each one securely, show the range clearly and handle being picked up in store. For these we recommend a rigid box with a lift-off lid or a drawer, or a sturdy folding carton with a window, with a cavity insert sized to each product.
PR and influencer kits go to people who will film the unboxing, so we treat the order things are revealed in as part of the design. We can print a message inside the lid, add tissue or a belly band, include a printed card explaining the products and fit an insert that presents everything at once. Because these kits travel by courier, we recommend sending them inside a plain or printed mailer box, so the presentation box arrives looking new.
Carton, rigid or magnetic box: which suits a beauty product?
We recommend a folding carton for everyday retail products, a rigid box for premium single items and sets, and a magnetic-closure rigid box when reopening the box is part of the value.
Folding cartons such as our Custom Cosmetic Boxes, Custom Folding Cartons and most of the product-specific beauty boxes are made from a single printed sheet that ships flat and is folded at packing. They suit most retail beauty - lip balm, nail polish, face masks, shampoo, hairspray and bath bombs - and they give plenty of print area for information. Custom Hang Tab Boxes add a hole for peg display.
Rigid Gift Boxes are made from thick board wrapped in printed or textured paper, and they arrive already assembled. They take more space to store and ship, but they feel substantial, which suits fragrance, premium skin care, jewellery and gift sets. Magnetic Closure Boxes are rigid boxes with a hinged lid held by hidden magnets, giving a satisfying close that your customers often keep and reuse.
- Folding carton: flat-packed, information-friendly, everyday retail
- Rigid box: a heavier feel for premium items and sets
- Magnetic closure: a keepsake box that reopens cleanly
Can cosmetic packaging be more sustainable?
Yes. We size the box closely to your container, keep it to paper-based materials where we can, and avoid mixing in plastic films and foam that make a box harder to recycle.
Customers notice a large box around a small bottle. Because we size every carton from your container, there is no wasted space to begin with. We make inserts from paperboard rather than foam, and we can leave out plastic windows and wraps, all without changing how the product looks on the shelf.
Finishes are where we help you balance looks and recyclability. Plastic laminates and metallised boards are harder to recycle, so we can suggest a water-based coating, an uncoated or kraft board, or foil used only on the logo. A rigid box your customer keeps and reuses is another way to make the packaging last. If you want an environmental message on the box, we help you word it so it says exactly what the packaging does.
