Choosing books & stationery packaging

Which box suits a single book, a box set or a stationery range?

We match the box to how the item reaches its owner: a mailer for a book sent by post, a book-style or drawer box for a set that lives on a shelf, and a sleeve or rigid gift box for stationery that is given or sold as a gift.

A book sold online mostly needs to travel well, so Custom Mailer Boxes sized to the book are the everyday answer. A box set or collector's edition is kept on a shelf for years, so it needs a format that looks like part of the collection: Book Style Boxes, which open on a spine like a hardback, or Custom Drawer Boxes, where the books sit in a tray that slides out of a printed outer case.

Notebooks, planners and card packs are light and flat, and often bought as presents. Custom Sleeve Boxes give a whole range one shared tray with a different printed sleeve for each design, while Rigid Gift Boxes suit pen and notebook sets that are given rather than used.

  • Posted books: a mailer sized to the book
  • Series and editions: book-style or drawer box
  • Stationery ranges and gifts: sleeve or rigid gift box

Will a book arrive with crisp corners after a trip through the post?

Yes. We size each mailer closely to the book and hold it away from the walls, so the corners and spine are not the first thing to meet a knock.

Books are heavy for their size, so a loose book slides and lands on a corner. Send us the trimmed size and thickness of the book, with the dust jacket on if it has one, and we draw the mailer so the book sits flat with only a small, even gap all round. For a hardback or valuable copy, we add a corrugated insert that frames the book and keeps its corners clear of the outer walls.

Our mailers close with a tuck front and locking ears, so the book stays shut in without tape. For single slim paperbacks we can make a letterbox-friendly mailer in thin board: tell us the depth you need to stay under and we size the packed box, not just the empty one, to fit.

  • We size from the book with its jacket on
  • A corrugated frame insert for hardbacks and signed copies
  • Letterbox depths for slim paperbacks

How do you make a box set or slipcase for a book series?

We build the case around the whole series standing together, setting the spine width from the combined thickness of every volume so the books slide in snugly and the case sits square on a shelf.

Send us the height, width and thickness of each book in the set, and tell us whether the spines should show or be hidden. If the spines are part of the look, we make a Custom Drawer Box with the case closed at one end: the books stand in the tray and come out with a ribbon pull or a thumb cut. If you want the set to open like one large volume, a Book Style Box gives you a printed cover, a spine for the series title and an inside lid for an introduction or a reading order.

For a series that will be reprinted or extended, a sleeve is the flexible choice. We keep one plain tray and print a new Custom Sleeve Box design for each edition, so a later reprint can carry new artwork on the same size. We show every book's position on the dieline and digital proof before anything is made.

What packaging suits a special or signed edition?

We recommend a rigid Book Style Box with a fitted insert for special and signed editions, because collectors keep the box, display it and judge the edition by it.

We wrap rigid board in coated or textured paper, print the title on the spine so it reads on a shelf, and add gold, silver or rose gold foil, embossing or spot UV where you want them noticed. We keep heavy foil away from the hinge line, where the wrap flexes each time the box opens.

Inside, a die cut insert holds the book in its own recess with a finger notch to lift it out, and a card pocket in the lid can hold a signed bookplate, a numbered card or a print. We allow for the thickness of that card in the spine, so the lid still closes flat. For editions opened often, we can reinforce the spine with book cloth under the wrap. For posting, we send it inside a mailer.

  • Spine title so the box reads on a shelf
  • A lid pocket for a signed bookplate or card
  • Book cloth spine for editions opened often

How should notebooks, planners and journals be packaged?

We make most notebook and planner packaging as a printed sleeve or a slim carton, because these products are flat, light and sold on how their cover looks.

A notebook's cover is what sells it, so the packaging often frames it rather than hides it. A belly band or a Custom Sleeve Box lets the cover show at the ends while the sleeve carries your brand, the page count and the paper type. For planners sold as a gift, a Custom Two-Piece Rigid Box or a Book Style Box adds weight and gives room for stickers, inserts or a pen alongside.

Dated planners and diaries change every year while the format stays the same. We keep the box or tray size fixed and change only the printed sleeve for each year or colourway, so your range stays consistent from one season to the next. Tell us every size you sell and we work out how few box sizes can cover them.

How do you package pens and stationery gift sets?

We give each piece its own cavity in a fitted insert, so a pen, a notebook and smaller pieces such as clips, refills or sticky notes sit apart and stay exactly where they were placed.

Pens are slim and heavy at one end, so they need a place of their own. We cut a channel for each pen and a shallow recess for the notebook in a cardboard, rigid or foam insert, with a finger notch beside each so the pieces lift out cleanly. Magnetic Closure Boxes and Rigid Gift Boxes with a fitted insert suit a single fine pen or a writing set, while Custom Drawer Boxes suit card sets and smaller stationery that looks good on a sliding tray.

Send us the exact measurements of every item in the set, including the pen with its cap and clip. We lay each one out on the dieline first and then set the box depth from the tallest piece.

What box holds a greeting card bundle with wrapping paper?

We size a flat box around the folded paper and the envelopes, so the cards, the gift wrap, any tags and ribbon sit in layers without being bent.

Card sets and wrap bundles are wide, flat and easily creased, so the box has to hold them flat rather than standing up. A shallow Custom Two-Piece Rigid Box or a Custom Sleeve Box over a tray keeps folded sheets and envelopes level, and a card insert can separate the cards from the paper.

We can repeat a card's pattern on the lid or sleeve and add foil to pick out a detail. Rolled gift wrap needs a different shape, and our Custom Round Boxes are made as tubes that hold a roll without flattening it.

Can a book subscription box fit a hardback one month and a paperback the next?

Yes. We size the mailer for the largest book you expect to send and add an insert or spacer that holds a smaller book just as firmly.

Book subscriptions rarely send the same size twice, and often add a bookmark or a small treat. We build Custom Mailer Boxes or Custom Subscription Boxes around your biggest likely title and fit a corrugated or cardboard insert that takes up the space when a slimmer book goes out, so nothing moves on the way.

The outside stays the same every month and the inside of the lid can carry a printed message. Send us the sizes of recent titles and we work out one box size that suits them all.
