Choosing florists packaging

Which box suits fresh flowers, preserved roses or dried flowers?

We build the box around what the flowers need: an open, lined box for fresh arrangements, a fully lined box with a closed or clear lid for preserved roses, and a lidded box with a soft lining for dried flowers.

Fresh flowers live in damp foam and are made to be seen with the lid off, so the box is really a display stand with a lid for the journey. We give it a water-resistant liner and enough depth for the heads to sit just above the rim.

Preserved roses need no water but fade in strong light and damp air, so they suit a box that stays closed. We line the inside fully with fabric or paper and close it with a lift-off lid, a magnetic flap or a clear lid that shows the roses while keeping dust off. Dried flowers shed a little as they are handled, so a lidded box with a soft lining catches loose petals and protects the stems.

  • Fresh: open box with a water-resistant liner
  • Preserved: fully lined, closed or clear lid
  • Dried: lidded box with a soft lining

Can a flower box hold an arrangement in wet floral foam?

Yes. We line every box meant for fresh flowers with a water-resistant liner, so the damp foam sits inside it and never against the board.

The liner goes in before the foam, and comes up the walls far enough to hold any water that runs off when the foam is topped up. Send us the size of the foam block you use for each arrangement and we draw the liner and the box around it, so the foam fits snugly and does not slide when the box is lifted.

We keep printed detail and foil away from the lower part of the box, where a wet hand or a damp counter is most likely to touch it. We can also print a small care card asking the recipient to add a little water to the foam every day or two and keep the box out of direct sun, so your arrangement lasts as long as it should.

What size hat box do I need for my arrangements?

Tell us how many stems go into each arrangement, the size of the foam block and how tall the flowers stand above it, and we size the box and lid from those three things.

A hat box is sized from the inside. The foam block and liner set the base, the stems need enough depth to be held firmly, and the lid needs enough height to clear the tallest bloom without touching it. A photo of a finished arrangement with its height noted shows us exactly what the box has to hold.

Most florists sell the same arrangement in more than one size, such as a small box of roses and a larger mixed one. We size each box in the range and keep the wrap and branding the same across all of them. For romantic orders, our Custom Round Boxes also come in heart and oval shapes, built the same way as the round tube.

  • Number of stems in each size you sell
  • Size of the foam block you use
  • Height of the flowers above the foam

Round hat box, square box or drawer box: which suits a flower shop?

We recommend a round hat box for domed rose arrangements, a square or rectangular rigid box for rows of blooms and mixed designs, and a drawer box when the flowers come with a gift.

The round hat box is the shape most customers picture when they order flowers in a box. Our Custom Flower Boxes come in this round build and in square and rectangular rigid builds, which stack more neatly in your workroom and give flat panels for your logo. Rigid Gift Boxes in a long shape suit a single row of roses or stems laid side by side.

A drawer box lets you sell more than flowers. The arrangement sits on top and a slide-out drawer below holds chocolates, jewellery or a card, with a water-resistant liner under the flowers to keep the drawer dry. If you want the flowers seen before the lid comes off, we can add a window to the lid, as we do on Custom Window Boxes.

How do flower boxes travel safely to the recipient?

A flower box travels well carried level from the base, so for hand delivery and collection we make a paper carrier bag sized to the box, and for the post we pack the box inside a shipping carton.

The arrangement is anchored in its foam, and the rigid walls of the box protect the outer blooms, so the main thing is keeping the box upright. We make Custom Paper Bags with a wide base sized to each of your boxes and a reinforced base card that takes the weight of damp foam, with rope or ribbon handles that suit a gift and match your colours.

Preserved and dried flowers can go by post, because there is no water to spill. We recommend sending the rigid box inside one of our plain or printed Custom Mailer Boxes, so it arrives with its wrap unmarked. Fresh stems sent by courier are a different job, and for those we make long Custom Shipping Boxes to the length of the stems.

How should I plan flower boxes for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day?

We recommend one core set of boxes in your brand colours that works all year, with seasonal touches added on top, so your stock is ready for every peak without a separate box for each one.

Valentine's Day and Mother's Day bring a rush of the same few orders, usually red or pink roses in your most popular sizes. Order your core boxes around the sizes that sold most at last year's peaks, which also keeps your foam blocks and liners standard. A heart-shaped box is the one seasonal shape many shops add.

For the season itself, a printed seal sticker from our Custom Labels & Stickers range, a ribbon or a seasonal care card changes the look of your everyday box in seconds. The box stays the same, so anything left over after the rush goes straight back into use for birthdays, anniversaries and sympathy orders.

  • One core box range in your brand colours
  • Order the sizes that sold most last season
  • Stickers, ribbons and cards for the seasonal look

Can flower boxes match my shop's colours and logo?

Yes. We wrap the box in your brand colour, put your logo on the lid in foil or embossing, and carry the same look onto your bags and stickers so every order is recognisably yours.

Send us your colour references and we match the wrap to them. A logo in Gold, Silver & Rose Gold Foiling on the lid or side is the classic florist mark, and Embossing & Debossing gives a quieter raised or pressed finish that suits a minimal style. Deep greens, blacks and navies make flowers glow, and we recommend soft-touch Lamination on dark wraps, which keeps them clean through a day of handling.

The inside rim shows around the flowers once the lid is off, so we can line it in a second colour that frames the arrangement. We set out the lid, walls and lining on your Dielines & Templates and show every finish on the Digital Proofs, so you see exactly how the box, its bag and its sticker look together before we make them.

Where does the gift message go in a flower box?

We can print a message inside the lid, add a printed card with space for your handwritten note, or give the card its own place in a drawer, so the words reach the recipient clean and dry.

The inside of the lid is the first thing seen when the box opens, so we can print it with your brand line or a seasonal greeting. It suits preserved rose boxes especially, because the lid stays with the box and the message is kept along with it.

Personal messages change with every order, so most florists write them by hand. We print matching cards in your colours with a blank area for the note, and the care instructions on the back, so one card does both jobs. In a drawer box the card goes in the drawer, away from the foam, and with a paper bag it can travel in the bag alongside the box.
